On Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 9:00AM, The Nord Center held its first annual Mind over Miles 5K Run and 1M Walk at the Bur Oak picnic area, Lorain County Metro Parks Black River Reservation on Ford Road in Elyria. The event attracted a field of 185 runners and walkers who enjoyed a lovely morning for a race. The event raised approximately $22,000 to support improving access to mental healthcare in Lorain County.
We are grateful to the many sponsors who supported us as well as the volunteers who arrived bright and early to ensure a safe, fun and well-organized event for all.
We also thank our partners at Hermes for their professionalism and expertise. Photographs from the event are available on the event website at: https://runsignup.com/Race/Photos/OH/Elyria/MindoverMiles
The inspiration for holding this event came from our Board member, Bret Buike (“Buckeye Bret”) who made The Nord Center and Recovery Resources the beneficiary of his third annual Goggins Challenge. The Goggins 4x4x48 challenge is a simple concept that was pioneered by ultramarathon runner David Goggins. Depending on your level of ability, you either walk or run 4 miles every four hours for 48 hours which totals 48 miles. Bret had a vision to make the weekend one focused on recovery, mental health and veterans’ suicide prevention and to raise not only money but awareness of these important issues. And we were proud to have him complete his challenge at the Mind over Miles event.
We look forward to seeing you next year!

Bret Buike was interviewed about the walk by Randy Hugg of The Morning Mix on Mix 102.7.
