Vocational Services
For many people, working at a job is a meaningful part of their life. Learning a new skill, earning a paycheck, and interacting with co-workers helps people feel good about themselves and develop confidence in their abilities. Vocational Services offers two programs: 1) Supported Employment and 2) Vocational Skills Training.
Supported Employment Services
The Nord Center's Supported Employment team offers an array of vocational services to help individuals find and keep jobs in the community. Every effort is made to help people find jobs that they like and that accommodate their needs. Job Placement Specialists assist individuals with job seeking skills such as resume development, interviewing, and filling out applications. The Placement Specialist can also advocate for employment with local businesses and even accompany the job seeker on job interviews.
Once a person has obtained a job, the Placement Specialist will continue to meet with the person and the supervisors to ensure the all is going well on the job. If additional training is required, a Job Coach may assist the individual and the company to improve performance.
Vocational Skills Training
This program is designed to help people determine their interests and skills. Evaluations consist of “paper and pencil” tests and work samples to help determine the types of jobs a person might do well and enjoy. Some individuals also work with our training programs (situation assessment) for a few days to test their stamina or to try different types of work.
Once the testing and work trials are completed, the Vocational Evaluator will write a report of the test results and make recommendations for career goals. The Evaluator can also provide information about services that will help each person reach their goal.
Some people benefit from training in a specific field. The Nord Center offers three separate training programs. Skills training programs are typically eight to twelve weeks in length, 30 hours per week. The three training programs are:
- Clerical/Computer Skills
- Building Trades
- Food Service
